A MIXER’S BEST FRIEND: F* i: P0 U3 I- k ?1 J' z0 G
The Black Box Analog Design HG-2 boasts a number of features in one versatile box that will outmatch multiple pieces of gear when used together. This line level, stereo unit is perfect for the mixing and mastering process when engineers are looking to add saturation, natural compression, harmonics, increased RMS and other enhancements.( p) z; [" q# g O5 g/ Z8 r3 k

Utilizing Cinemag input transformers, the HG-2 feeds two paths. The main signal path travels through a tube stage made up of 6U8A Pentode tubes, which is then driven through the Triode stage. The result is a wide range of sounds from subtle harmonics to complete saturation.

A parallel signal path, also run from the input transformer, uses a set of 12AX7 tubes, specifically chosen for saturation and harmonics. This circuit can be controlled by a three-way switch, which allows audio engineers to choose the amount of frequency content feeding into the signal. In the “Low” position, the low mids and sub frequencies become saturated. When selecting the “Flat” setting, the HG-2 saturates full bandwidth, while opting for “High” will saturate just the high mids and high frequencies.9 h4 ^7 R% V* J4 e- j+ a( A" L
+ ~/ E4 `* k; d+ J, z l" V& @Black Box Analog Design’s HG-2 utilizes a “harmonics” knob, which allows users to control how much of the processed parallel signal becomes fed into the main signal before the Pentode Stage. Both stages will then reach the passive output attenuation before the Cinemag output transformers.3 ^+ n$ G% f( I) q% I Y
+ r; ^- j! D3 D' Z: X. AFor even more control over your sound, the HG-2 features an “air” switch that engages a subtle top end lift, while an “alt” tube button switches between two different 12AX7 tubes in the parallel circuit. This option gives users the choice of two completely different types of saturation in an instant.* Q, g3 f4 S C

AMERICAN MADE TUBE GEAR
4 n( V5 D) y/ D) }: I' Q1 CFor five years, the HG-2 has been a labor of love for Black Box Audio Design founders Eric Racy and Robert Wainscott. Each aspect of the HG-2 was designed and created by the duo (who were originally studio producers and engineers), from the power supply down to hand-wound transformers. Their dedication to tube-based gear and hands-on approach makes the HG-2 an extremely special unit and the proof is in the box’s sound.
