| NAMM 2022: RME 12Mic-D 12-ch preamp with Dante, ADAT & MADI Just before NAMM, RME low-key showcased a prototype interface that gathered plenty of attention. But it turns out that was just an appetizer! The main course is actually the RME 12Mic-D, a Dante-enabled rework of the German manufacturer’s digitally controlled, 12-channel mic preamp and converter.
The 1U rackmount unit offers 12 digitally controlled mic preamps and premium analog-to-digital converters with Dante, MADI and ADAT connections. At the time of writing, the shipment date and price were not disclosed. The unit should be available ‘soon’ from RME dealers, such as our affiliate partner Thomann *. RME 12Mic-D preamp with Dante The Dante upgrade of the RME 12Mic retains the 12 inputs for microphone and line signals. Channels 1 to 4 are equipped with combo XLR/jack inputs for line level equipment and Hi-Z instruments. The rest are straight XLR. The amplification for each channel is controlled digitally in 1dB increments. Up to 75 dB gain is available per channel. The tonal properties should match the previous model, which is typical RME – clean as a whistle. The internal A/D converters work at up to 24-bit/192 kHz resolution. Connectivity options include Dante, MADI and ADAT. The unit has separate coaxial MADI ports and supports an optional SFP module for optical connection. There are also three ADAT ports and Word Clock I/O.
The unit’s front and rear panels. All incoming digital and analog signals can be monitored from the headphone socket. Likewise, the routing matrix lets you assign all analog and digital inputs to any of the available outputs. Up to 64 audio channels can come in via Dante. The 12Mic-D can be operated from the LCD screen on the front panel, in addition to a web interface and network link (WLAN). The menus and softwarre let you organize channels in groups, activate phantom power, and route between inputs and outputs.
